Our Homeschool Schedule for 2024

Hello everyone, welcome back. I’m Christine, a homeschooling mom of three. Today, I’m excited to share our homeschool schedule for 2024 with you.

As we begin the new homeschool year, things are slightly different for us. Last year, I had a preschooler, a first grader, and a third grader. This year, however, I’m homeschooling a kindergartner, a second grader, and a fourth grader. While I use these grades as a loose guide, I prioritize meeting my children’s individual needs over adhering strictly to grade levels.

Adding kindergarten to our routine this year brought some apprehension, but so far, things are going well. Today, I’ll walk you through our weekly and daily schedules, starting with the broader picture.

Homeschool Schedule 2024

We follow the New Zealand calendar year, beginning our homeschool journey in February and wrapping up around November or December. Our year is divided into six-week terms, with a week-long break between each. This structure allows for 36 weeks of schooling followed by a substantial summer break, which suits us perfectly.

Weekly Schedule

Moving to our weekly routine, we conduct school five days a week, with two of those days being half days to provide flexibility. Mondays are full school days, while Tuesdays are dedicated to individual subjects in the morning, followed by our homeschool meetup in the afternoon.

Wednesdays and Thursdays are full days of schooling, and Fridays consist of a mix of individual and group subjects. This arrangement allows us to accommodate any unforeseen circumstances, such as sick days, while maintaining a consistent rhythm.

Daily Homeschool Schedule

Now, delving into our daily schedule, our day typically begins at 6 a.m. I spend the first hour working in my studio while the kids remain in their rooms until 7 a.m., a routine we’ve established over the years. After some family time, breakfast, and morning chores, we gather at 9 a.m. to start our individual subjects.

I’ve found that beginning the day with independent work boosts our productivity. While I assist my kindergartner with her lessons, my older children tackle their language arts and math assignments. By 10 a.m., we aim to conclude our individual subjects, though flexibility is key if fatigue sets in.

Following a short break, we regroup for our group subjects, which include history, science, and Morning Virtues. These sessions incorporate various activities like picture study and composer study, enriching our curriculum with cultural exposure and artistic appreciation.

By lunchtime, around 12 p.m., we wrap up our formal schooling for the day. Our afternoons are reserved for extracurricular activities, household chores, and personal pursuits. Tuesdays involve our homeschool meetup, Wednesdays feature extracurricular classes, and Mondays include piano lessons for my daughter.

Evenings are cherished as moments of relaxation and family time. We prioritize quiet activities and downtime to recharge after busy days. While our schedule is full, it’s also fulfilling, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to homeschool my children.
