This is when the newborn stage really begins to merge into the baby stage.

Looking back at pictures from their earliest days, it may be hard to believe that a tiny newborn is the same baby now starting to explore the world around them.

These weeks bring plenty of exciting changes for both of you.

Seven and Eight Week Old Baby Milestones

I really enjoyed this stage. My babies started to sleep a bit more and yet they were still really little and perfect for cuddling.

Developmental Milestones

Week Eight: Charlotte's Newborn Summary

Your baby is starting to show more intentional interactions with their surroundings, and their physical and cognitive skills are developing rapidly.

  • Using Their Hands: Around this time, your baby may start using their hands more purposefully. They might begin grabbing for toys or other objects within reach. While their grip isn’t strong yet, it’s an excellent opportunity to help them practice. Offer lightweight toys or soft objects they can easily grasp, and encourage their exploration.
  • Rolling Over: If your baby hasn’t rolled over yet, you might witness this exciting milestone during these weeks. They’re building the strength needed for this movement through consistent tummy time and other physical activities. Be sure to provide a safe space for practice and celebrate their growing mobility.

I found it very amusing watching my babies try and grab things. Their depth perception was still lacking. I’m always impressed by the determination babies and toddlers have.

They try the same thing over and over again until they finally do what they need to. Honestly, we adults could learn a lot from them and their ability to persevere.

Sleep Patterns

While sleeping through the night may still feel far away, you might notice your baby’s nighttime sleep stretches becoming longer and more predictable.

Establishing a consistent nighttime routine can help set the stage for better sleep habits. Include calming activities like a warm bath, a gentle lullaby, or reading a short story to signal that it’s time for sleep.

These cues will help your baby begin to differentiate between day and night.

We implemented a dream feed which meant that the longest stretch of sleep that my babies had aligned with when I went to bed as well.

It was a game-changer!

Social and Emotional Growth

Your baby is becoming more attuned to their environment and may start showing preferences for familiar faces and voices. These interactions are a fantastic time to bond through eye contact, talking, and singing.

Your baby might even respond with their first intentional giggle if they haven’t already. That first newborn giggle is pure delight!

Getting Out and About

By weeks 7 and 8, many parents feel more confident about leaving the house with their baby. Knowing your baby’s routine can help you plan outings during their happier, more alert periods.

Whether it’s a walk in the park, a visit with friends, or a quick trip to the store, these outings can be a refreshing change of pace for both you and your baby.

I remember feeling so anxious and overwhelmed the first time I went grocery shopping with my newborn, but the more I did it, the easier it became.

Tips for These Weeks

  • Encourage Hand Use: Offer toys with different textures or sounds to keep your baby engaged. This helps develop their motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
  • Support Tummy Time: Continue incorporating tummy time sessions to strengthen your baby’s neck, back, and shoulder muscles. Change up the scenery to keep things interesting.
  • Stick to Routines: Routines provide comfort and predictability for both you and your baby. Keep focusing on consistent feeding, sleeping, and play schedules.
  • Celebrate Progress: Every baby grows at their own pace, so don’t worry if they’re not hitting every milestone at the exact time. Celebrate the unique journey you’re on together.

Final Thoughts

Weeks 7 and 8 are filled with exciting developments as your baby continues to grow and discover their world.

Enjoy the special moments, stay flexible, and take pride in how far you’ve both come. You’re doing an incredible job!
