Tummy time is one of those essential baby activities that everyone talks about, but as a first-time mom, it can feel a little intimidating. Especially if your baby seems to hate it.
You’ve probably heard that it’s important for your baby’s development—helping them strengthen neck, shoulder, and back muscles—but getting your little one to enjoy it is another story! My babies would howl!
The truth is, that tummy time can be tricky at first. Some babies cry or fuss when placed on their tummy, but with a few simple strategies, you can make it a fun, engaging part of your baby’s routine.
Here are some tips to help your baby enjoy tummy time while also making it a special bonding experience for you both.

How to Make Tummy Time Enjoyable (or at least less miserable) for All
As a mom of three kids who are all well past being newborns, I will say that it’s important not to get too caught up in getting it all right. Do your best, but babies aren’t robots.
Some babies are going to protest tummy time for a good long while and that’s okay. You’re not doing anything wrong.
In saying that, let’s see if any of these tips might help you out.
#1 Start Small and Build Up

If your baby isn’t loving tummy time right away, don’t stress. Like any new experience, it takes time for them to adjust. Remember, at that age, their heads are large in comparison to their little bodies. It is hard work for them to hold it up!
Begin with short sessions, just 1-2 minutes at a time, and slowly increase the duration as your baby gets more comfortable. Set a timer! 1-2 minutes when your baby isn’t particularly happy can feel like an eternity.
Aim to work up to 10-15 minutes of tummy time several times a day, but remember—every minute counts, especially in the early weeks.
#2 Make It Part of Your Routine

Incorporating tummy time into your daily routine can help normalize it for your baby. Choose times when your little one is well-rested and alert—after a nap or a diaper change, for example.
I would get my baby up from their nap, feed them, and then do tummy time.
Consistency will help your baby know what to expect, and you’ll likely find that they grow to enjoy the predictability of tummy time.

#3 Get Down on Their Level

One of the best ways to keep your baby happy during tummy time is to get down on the floor with them. Babies love eye contact and your familiar face can be a source of comfort and reassurance.
Lie in front of them, smile, talk, or even sing to keep their attention. Your presence alone can make a world of difference in how they experience tummy time.
First-time moms don’t usually have the luxury of having older siblings to entertain the baby, but if you do have anyone else at home with you, try getting them to do this with the baby as well.
#4 Use Toys and Props

Introducing a few fun toys can turn tummy time into an exciting play session. Choose brightly colored toys or those that make gentle noises to capture your baby’s attention.
You can also try using a baby-safe mirror so your little one can look at their reflection—babies are often fascinated by faces, even their own!
When my babies were little, I used a black and white fabric fold-out book. I could easily prop it up for them and they loved looking at the contrasting colors.
#5 Try a Tummy Time Pillow

If your baby seems uncomfortable lying flat, a tummy time pillow or a rolled-up towel placed under their chest can give them a little boost.
This slight elevation can make it easier for your baby to lift their head and look around, which may help them feel more engaged and less frustrated. Just be sure to supervise closely.
Another thing to try is having your baby do some tummy time while they’re lying on your chest. It’s a bit easier for them and they can look at you while they’re doing it. The physical closeness will likely also help to soothe them.
#6 Sing and Talk to Your Baby

Your voice is one of your baby’s favorite sounds. Chat with them during tummy time, even if it’s just narrating what you’re doing or describing what they see.
Singing lullabies or upbeat tunes can also make tummy time more enjoyable. The rhythm of your voice will help soothe your baby while also keeping them focused on the fun.
#7 Go Outside for a Change of Scenery

Sometimes a simple change of scenery can make tummy time more enjoyable. If the weather permits, bring your baby outside on a blanket for some tummy time in the fresh air.
The sounds of birds, the feel of a gentle breeze, or the sight of leaves moving can all be fascinating for your baby, turning tummy time into a mini outdoor adventure.
My kids ALL loved to be outside from a very young age. If they were super fussy, going outdoors was one of my go-to methods to get them to calm down.
#8 Be Patient and Encouraging

It’s normal for babies to fuss during tummy time, especially when they’re just starting out. Stay positive and encouraging!
If your baby starts to cry, it’s okay to leave them there for a short time while you soothe them. Talk to them and rub their back. If they really start to get worked up then it’s totally fine to pick them up and try again later.
Tummy time doesn’t have to be perfect every time, and it’s more important to make it a positive experience overall.
Final Thoughts
As a first-time mom, it’s easy to feel unsure about tummy time, especially if your baby isn’t a fan right away. It’s hard to see your baby fussy or upset. But remember, you and your baby are learning together.
With patience, encouragement, and a little creativity, tummy time will become a fun part of your daily routine.
Before you know it, your little one will be pushing up, rolling over, and reaching all those important developmental milestones.
