Sometimes it can be really helpful to have a baby routine example. I’ve put together this post that gives all the 0-3 month baby routines for my daughter Charlotte.
The routines are listed week by week as well as a summary of what that week held and any changes that were made.
We used a hybrid of the Moms on Call Method in combination with Babywise.
As a result, our daughter was sleeping through the night and napping well from a very early age.
So many people believe it is impossible for a baby under the age of 3 months to have a routine.
I would strongly disagree, although I will admit that routines need to also encompass an element of flexibility.
Should your 3-month old have a routine?
There is no rule book that says they must. However, it can be really helpful to the entire family if they do.
Charlotte is our youngest, and a routine was an absolute must with her older siblings only being 3 & 2 at the time she joined our family.
Important Points When Establishing Newborn Sleep Schedules:
#1 Watch your Baby, Not the Clock
When setting up newborn routines, it is very important that the most important thing you keep in mind are the needs of your baby.
Learn their cues and follow them.
If they are hungry before the time set out in your routine, feed them.
There are so many growth spurts during the 0-3 month range so it is normal for their feeding patterns to chop and change a bit.
At times they will tire more easily than others. Keep that in mind and put them to bed earlier in order to prevent over-tiredness.
#2 Steer Away from Unnecessary Sleep Props
It can be challenging to balance independent sleep skills with preventing over-tiredness in newborns.
It can be done though! Read this post to find out more about finding the balance.
In the mean time, do try and steer away from unnecessary sleep props. Give your newborn baby the chance to learn to fall asleep without your help.
It is such a valuable skill for them to have!
#3 Be Flexible
As both previous points have mentioned, the first 3 months of a baby’s life are a bit of a balancing act.
This is especially true if you have other children to care for.
Give yourself and your baby lots of grace as you work through this time of transition.
Be flexible with the schedule and enjoy getting to know your new edition.
