A bedtime routine is one of the best gifts you can give your baby—and yourself! It may not always be peaceful, but it will help make nights easier.
Establishing a consistent, calming routine not only helps your little one wind down at the end of the day, but it also promotes healthy sleep habits that can set the tone for years to come.
For many parents, bedtime can be a challenging part of the day, everyone is a bit tired and worn out. However, in my experience (with all three kids) it was well worth the effort.
Here are some key steps to help you create a relaxing bedtime routine that will promote good sleep habits for your baby.

7 Steps to an Easy Baby Bedtime Routine
My children are all out of the baby/toddler stage and yet, they still have a bedtime routine that they go through each night.
No matter how old you get, a routine that signals to your body that it’s time to wind down and get ready for sleep is always helpful.
I’m so glad that we started the habit right from when our babies were tiny.
I’ll also add that bedtime routines do not need to be complicated. In fact, I would highly recommend keeping it as simple as possible.
#1 Set a Consistent Bedtime

Babies thrive on routine, and one of the most important aspects of any bedtime routine is consistency.
Choose a bedtime that works for your family and stick to it as closely as possible each night. This will help regulate your baby’s internal clock and signal to them that it’s time to start winding down for the day.
While it’s tempting to adjust bedtime based on how the day went, sticking to a regular time will help your baby develop a healthy sleep pattern over time.
I know it feels rigid, especially if this is your first baby, but it’s not forever.
I would also caution not to get too hung up on having a set bedtime routine. Special occasions where there will be a late night every now and then are totally okay. Your baby will adjust.
Balance is key. Be consistent for the most part but it’s also okay to deviate every now and again.

#2 Create a Calm and Cozy Sleep Environment

Before you even start your bedtime routine, make sure your baby’s sleep environment is calm and inviting.
Dim the lights to signal that bedtime is approaching, and keep noise to a minimum. You might also want to use a white noise machine or fan to create a soothing background sound that drowns out household noises.
Honestly, our white noise machine became a key signal for my babies to know that sleep time was coming.
The room temperature should be comfortable—neither too hot nor too cold.
Dress your baby in soft, breathable pajamas, and ensure their crib or bassinet is free from distractions, like toys or unnecessary blankets, to promote a safe sleep environment.
#3 Start with a Warm Bath

A warm bath is a perfect way to begin your baby’s bedtime routine. Not only does it help relax their muscles, but the soothing sensation of water can signal that it’s time to slow down and get ready for sleep.
Keep the bath gentle and short, using soft, calming soap and warm water.
Bath time was always something to look forward to for my babies. Even if they had been cranky all day, there was something about the warm water that just made them super happy.
After the bath, wrap your baby in a cozy towel and move on to the next step. The warmth and comfort from bath time will help set the stage for a calm evening.

#4 Incorporate a Gentle Massage

After your baby’s bath, consider giving them a gentle massage with baby-safe lotion or oil.
Not only is this a relaxing activity, but it’s also a great way to bond with your baby while helping them release any tension they may be holding onto.
Focus on slow, gentle strokes on their arms, legs, back, and tummy. A relaxing massage can help soothe your baby and make them feel more comfortable as they transition into sleep.
Two of my babies had reflux and giving them a little massage helped their tummies not to be sore before they were laid down for the night.
#5 Dim the Lights and Read a Story or Sing a Lullaby

After your baby is clean and comfortable, move to a quiet activity that encourages relaxation, like reading a short bedtime story or singing a lullaby.
Keep your voice soft and soothing as you engage your baby in this gentle interaction. Babies love the sound of your voice, and this time spent reading or singing can become a cherished part of their bedtime routine.
Books with calming, repetitive language or lullabies with soft melodies work best. You’ll be amazed at how quickly your baby associates these activities with getting ready for sleep.
Your baby is never too young for you to begin doing this.
#6 Finish with a Feeding and Snuggles

For many babies, feeding is a natural part of the bedtime routine.
Whether you’re breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, the quiet, close contact can help your baby feel safe and ready for rest.
Keep the environment calm and dim, and try to avoid stimulating conversation or movement during this time.
After feeding, spend a few minutes snuggling your baby before placing them in their crib or bassinet. The closeness and warmth of this final step will help reinforce the idea that it’s time to sleep.
#7 Lay Your Baby Down Drowsy, But Awake

One of the keys to promoting good sleep habits is teaching your baby how to fall asleep independently.
After you’ve completed your bedtime routine, try to lay your baby down while they’re drowsy but still awake. This will help them learn to self-soothe and fall asleep on their own, which can lead to longer stretches of sleep during the night.
While it might be tempting to wait until they’re fully asleep before laying them down, giving them the opportunity to drift off on their own is a valuable skill that will benefit both of you in the long run.
However, do not stress about this step too much when they’re really tiny. It can be virtually impossible to keep them awake after a feed when they’re that little. It will come with time.
Final Thoughts
Creating a relaxing bedtime routine for your baby is one of the most effective ways to promote good sleep habits and make the end of the day a peaceful time for both you and your little one.
By incorporating these calming steps, you’ll help your baby transition smoothly from day to night, giving them the comfort and security they need to sleep soundly.
With consistency and a soothing routine, bedtime can become a special time to connect and unwind, leaving you both rested and ready for the next day ahead.
