LuvBug Learning App Review: Social Emotional Learning for Your Homeschool

We’ve tried a variety of learning apps in our homeschool. However, when LuvBug Learning reached out wanting to collaborate I was curious as to what a social emotional learning app would look like.

Not all learning apps are created equal. Many are clunky, not user friendly, or not entirely safe for children.

We’re often inclined to invest in educational apps that are strictly academic. However, social and emotional skills are just as important, if not more so, than learning how to read.

If our children cannot productively and positively engage with those around them then they’re missing some valuable life skills.

In this post, I’m going to share an overview of what LuvBug Learning offers and our personal experience with using the app.

Social Emotional Learning App: LuvBug Review

As with all learning apps, there are certain skills that are meant to be taught to your child. Let’s take a look at what LuvBug Learning offers.

What You Get

Over the years we’ve primarily used apps that are intended to teach reading, phonics, and literacy skills. An app for teaching social-emotional skills was not something I had seen before.

LuvBug Learning is an app that teaches social and emotional skills through the use of interactive games, questions, and educational videos.

However, it’s really unlike any app I’ve ever tried before.

For starters, the graphics are stunning. We’re talking Pixar-level graphics. It’s beautiful and engaging.

Upon signing up, you can create profiles for each child. You also get your own parent dashboard.

Inside the app, your child can click on their profile and they’ll be taken to a screen where they can either choose to play games or watch videos.

The games are interrupted every 90 seconds with a social-emotional question that your child needs to answer.

The videos are based on specific social scenarios and are very helpful.

The Parent Dashboard

I really want to mention the parent dashboard because it offers features I’ve not seen before.

You can view your child’s progress easily, as well as the time they’ve spent on the app.

However, my favorite tool is the ability to limit their time on the app. This is easily done through the parent dashboard.

You can set the amount of time they’re allowed to use the app for each day of the week. You can also set when during the day they can play.

This is something that you can individualize for each child’s profile, making it highly customizable.

They’ve really thought about making this a great, safe, screentime option for children.

Our Experience

At the time of using this app, my two older children were 5 and 7 years old. Both of them loved it!

In fact, I was really grateful for the in-built parental controls because otherwise, it would have been a battle to get them off it.

Something that I’m always conscious of when it comes to any kind of app or online learning resource is accessibility.

There is a myriad of reasons why accessibility is so important. I was very pleased to see the great features that are included in this app.

There are question marks beside each question that children can tap on to receive an explanation of each answer.

Also, the instructions for each game are very clearly explained by one of the characters in the app.

Overall, the language used and the tone in which it is delivered is wonderful. It is refreshing to hear in a world where so much online content is snarky and not uplifting.

It’s really reassuring knowing that the content in the app is reinforcing many of the concepts and values that we’re already teaching in our home.

I did laugh when my son piped up, “Mum, why are they telling me to clean up around the house?”.

I think every parent can appreciate reinforcement even if it’s in the form of an app.

Its interface is also very user-friendly. It works smoothly and we’ve had no issues with lagging or freezing, even on an older iPad.

My children don’t get frustrated when using this app because of how easy it is to use and understand. Other apps we’ve tried have lacked clear instructions which have made them more of a bother than a help.

Final Thoughts

The best way to teach social-emotional skills is through real-life everyday interactions. However, if you have a child who struggles in this area, I believe LuvBug Learning is a really wholesome app to try.

I also believe it’s a great app for parents wanting to introduce screen time to their children in a safe way.
