As homeschool moms, it is so vitally important to be intentional with our time. Over the years, my homeschool mom morning routine has changed.
I used to have little babies and now we’re well out of that stage. I still have younger kids but they’re not early risers and know to stay into their room until a particular time.
This has helped tremendously in helping me to curate a good morning routine.
I’m going to share some of my favorite things that I do each morning that help in different ways to set up our day well.
Just remember that what our homeschool routine looks like doesn’t have to be the same as yours. Each homeschool parent is going to have different needs and that’s absolutely okay.

- 7:30 AM Breakfast & homeschool morning time
- 8:30 AM Household chores, Bible time & get ready for the day

Early Rise and Shine

Waking up before the first rays of dawn stretch across the sky makes a huge difference to both the productivity of my day and my mental outlook. In this golden hour of quiet before the hustle of the day unfolds, I find the space to breathe deeply, to reflect, and to prepare mentally for the day ahead.
It’s a sacred time that sets the rhythm for our homeschool day. Embracing the morning’s calm helps me not just to wake up, but to rise refreshed and ready. For those who might find the concept of early mornings daunting, consider placing an alarm strategically beyond arm’s reach, encouraging a decisive start to the day.
A gentle yet purposeful morning routine, infused with personal rituals such as sipping tea while reviewing the daily homeschool schedule or jotting down things on your to-do list, can set a positive tone for your entire day.
This intentional morning routine is more than a start to the day; it’s a foundational practice that empowers me to meet our homeschooling responsibilities with grace and vigor.
My Use of Time
I use that first hour of my day to work. With nap times a thing of the past, I need the uninterrupted quiet to be able to think clearly. It’s also when my mind is most alert.
I know that is not the case for those of you who are night owls, so don’t feel bad if that’s the case. My brain turns to mush past 4pm.
You do not have to wake up super early in order to have a productive day, but it is good to form good habits that impact your home positively. Sometimes that means doing hard things.
For me, a little extra sleep sounds good at first, but the reality is that our day just does not flow as well when I don’t get up before my kids.
Breakfast and Homeschool Morning Time

Sharing breakfast isn’t merely about nutrition; it’s also the time when we incorporate homeschool morning basket into our homeschool morning routine.
Imagine sitting at the kitchen table, the aroma of scrambled eggs in the air, and the buzz of anticipation for the day ahead. This scene is where the magic of learning begins, not with books and pens, but with hearts and minds connecting.
Incorporating a bible story adds layers of moral and spiritual depth, setting a positive tone. Meanwhile, memory work over breakfast transforms our daily bread into a feast of knowledge, effortlessly blending daily life with educational goals.
In these moments, conversation flows, and learning becomes as natural as breathing, ensuring the day starts on a note of engaging curiosity and warm familial bonds.
As magical as that all sounds, the absolute truth is that I started doing morning basket over breakfast when my kids were really little because it kept them occupied. It has turned into a really special time for our family, but I began the habit in order to keep my kids sitting still for a decent length of time.
Including Chores
Integrating morning chores into our daily schedule is akin to laying the foundational stones for a castle of responsible habits.
For both us, the veteran homeschool mom, and our diligent knights and damsels (our kids), the act of tidying the living room, conquering a load of laundry, or orchestrating the kitchen table’s transformation from a breakfast nook to a school room, teaches the valuable lesson of stewardship and teamwork.
To elevate this from mundane to enjoyable, I’ve discovered that nothing works quite like turning chores into a game or setting a spirited timer. It’s a simple yet effective way to keep the castle of our homeschool kingdom both merry and manageable.
We don’t do all of our household chores in the morning, but the basics certainly get done.
I want my children to be in the habit of getting themselves ready for the day and maintaining their own spaces. Is it perfect? No. Do I still have to constantly check and remind? Yes. But, my kids are still little. Homeschool mamas know that it takes time to build good habits, but it is absolutely worth the effort.
One thing that helps is that the kids know they get free time once their chores are complete, so that helps them to work quickly.
Academic Ambitions

Transitioning smoothly from a nourishing breakfast and morning chores into the focused study time marks a pivotal moment in our homeschool morning routine. It’s here, that the time is truly dedicated to learning and focused academics.
Starting with core subjects like math and language arts isn’t just a checkbox on our daily homeschool schedule; it’s an intentional choice that primes the brain for a day filled with learning and discovery. But how do we ensure that both younger and older kids are not just occupied but truly engaged?
By weaving in memory work and independent projects tailored to their interests and development stages, we create a learning environment that accommodates the dynamic range of our homeschool family. This transition, when done thoughtfully, underscores the fabric of our daily life, knitting together the varied threads of our collective academic ambitions.
I rotate between all three of my kids and try to have all of them occupied with something during this time. It does take some work, but it helps us to stay on the right track.
I also really like getting the more mentally challenging homeschool subjects out of the way first in the day. It just makes everything flow more smoothly overall.
Mid-Morning Break and Transition

In crafting your perfect homeschool mom morning routine, don’t underestimate the transformative power of a mid-morning break. This pause for snacks and free play acts as a vital reset button for your children, rejuvenating their minds for the academic challenges that lie ahead.
It’s a moment of freedom within the structure of your daily homeschool schedule, allowing little lungs to laugh and little legs to run before they dive back into their school work. To transition smoothly back to learning, I’ve found it beneficial to intertwine different things that intrigue them, weaving in a mix of independent work and group activities.
It keeps them engaged and eager, preventing the day from becoming a monotonous blend of tasks.
We like to finish off our homeschool day with group subjects. It’s a little lighter in mental challenge and there’s lots of fun discussion.
I’ve found it much easier to gather the children back after their break to do group subjects than I did to do math and language arts.
Wrapping Up The Morning – On to The Rest of The Day

In wrapping up our morning and marching onward to the rest of the day, it’s imperative to recognize that a strategic yet adaptable homeschool mom morning routine is the key to a day brimming with productivity and joy.
The essence of a successful morning routine lies not in rigidly adhering to a set template, but in shaping it to align with the unique rhythms and needs of our family. As we go through the different seasons of our homeschool journey, the agility to tailor our daily itinerary ensures that we not only meet educational goals but also foster an environment where learning thrives.
Hence, I encourage you to sculpt your homeschool morning with a blend of intentionality and flexibility, making it a treasured cornerstone of your day.
Final Thoughts
As a homeschool mom, crafting a successful morning routine has always been about striking a delicate balance. It’s about intertwining the hard tasks with moments of joy, transitioning from one activity to the next with grace, all while keeping an eye on the ultimate prize – a fulfilling homeschool day. But let’s be honest, achieving this is no small feat.
Between trying to squeeze in a load of laundry, ensuring everyone has brushed their teeth, and diving into the day’s school work, it can sometimes feel like we’re orchestrating a symphony with a spoon.
Yet, amidst the whirlwind of daily chores and academic ambitions, I’ve found solace in the small victories. Whether it’s witnessing my older kids helping the younger ones with their morning chores, or the whole family gathering around our kitchen table for breakfast and a Bible story, these moments are the glue that holds our homeschool morning routine together.
They remind us that, in the midst of the mundane, we’re not just teaching our children about math and language arts, but about life.
And so, we march on, tweaking our routine as we go, embracing the different needs of our family, and cherishing the quieter moments – like a short walk before school time or an impromptu Bible study that ignites a spirited discussion.
These are the threads that weave together our day, making each homeschooling journey singularly our own. It’s in these moments that I’m reminded why crafting an intentional morning routine, though a bit of a challenge, is indeed worth every effort for the enriching experiences it brings to our daily life.
