Homeschool humanities is an important subject and one well worth teaching. If you’re on the hunt for some good resources, but don’t have much of a budget, then this post is for you.
Why teach this subject? Simply put, it gives us insight into the great accomplishments of those from the past and helps us to appreciate their impact on our current world.

Without further ado, here’s a little about an exciting homeschool resource – Heritage Humanities.
What is Heritage Humanities?
Heritage Humanities is a free online library full of Western humanities resources.
Their aim is to provide homeschoolers with an education in Western humanities upon which the Western world was founded.
This digital library is great for students aged 6-18.
It is currently a free resource but may potentially become a paid product in the future. For that reason alone, it’s a great time to go check it out and take advantage of what they have on offer right now.
Something to note is that Heritage Humanities does not imply that other cultures are not worth studying simply because they only highlight Western literature. However, this is what their focus is on their website with their resource.
Pros:
- Accessibility: Being online makes this a very accessible resource. If you have access to internet then you can access this resource.
- Flexibility: You can either read the books yourself or use the audio version. This makes it great for students who are perhaps not yet reading fluently. Plus, it takes the pressure off of mom to do all of the reading aloud.
- Interest: There is a variety of titles to choose from which makes it interesting for many students. The stories aren’t dry and boring, but engaging to students.
- Value for money: It’s free! How cool is that?!
- Navigation: You can easily navigate between different menus and also narrow down search results based on age.
Things to Consider:
- It’s basic: The literature provided is quality literature, but the platform is basic. This is not something that would put me off using it, but it’s worth noting.
- It’s Online: Not everyone loves using online resources within their homeschool. This is just something that is a personal preference.
- The Audio is Simple: The audio versions of the books is very simple and non-technical. It’s great for getting the job done, but not high quality.
My Thoughts on Heritage Humanities:
I will always be a huge advocate for teaching our children history and humanities. I believe that it is vital to ensure that we do not raise a generation of entitled humans.
Children need to understand the hard-fought achievements that were made by those who came before them so that they can have the privilege of living in the society we do now.
Teaching humanities gives students a more in-depth and broad perspective of how the Western world was set up and the values upon which it was built.
I think that Heritage Humanities is a wonderful resource to draw from in order to teach these skill sets to our students.
It is simple to use, free and contains quality literature.
As someone who lives outside of the United States, I’m always thankful for online resources as they dramatically reduce the cost of getting good teaching materials for my children.
I think this is the perfect tool to add along as a supplement with your social studies and history.
