Second Grade Homeschool Curriculum Choices 2024

I’m Christine, the proud homeschooling mama of three incredible kiddos, and today, I’m happy to be sharing with you our second grade homeschool curriculum picks for the 2024 school year.
We’re diving into second grade territory, although I’ll confess, I’m more about picking what suits my child’s learning level rather than strictly adhering to grade labels. So, without further ado, let’s delve into all the resources we’ll be using.
Our Second Grade Homeschool Curriculum Choices
Before we get started, I’ll share a little context so you know why I chose what I chose.
A Little Context
For those new around here, we’re entering our fourth year of homeschooling. My delightful trio is composed of a nine-year-old, a seven-year-old, and the youngest, who’s five-years-old.
We had a fantastic year of doing first grade in 2023. However, we’re actually making quite a few changes to the line up in 2024.

Second Grade Math with Confidence
For math this year we’re using Second Grade Math with Confidence.
We used the first-grade version last year, and it proved to be a fantastic choice. My daughter thoroughly enjoyed it, and so did I.
What’s even more exciting is that I’m using this curriculum for all three kids this year. With the ease of a downloadable PDF, I can print at home, making it a breeze to get organized.
A non-consumable instructor’s manual means I can use it again for future kiddos, and I only need to print the workbooks. Simple, effective, affordable, and enjoyable!
Making a Change to Language Arts: Embracing Abeka Grade 1
Now, here’s where we’ve made a significant change. At the tail end of 2023, we wrapped up “The Good and The Beautiful Level K” and ventured into Level 1. However, I sensed a need for a more robust foundation in phonics.
After some research, we made the switch to Abeka Grade 1 Language Arts, and I must say, it’s been a game-changer. In about seven to nine weeks, I’ve noticed a remarkable improvement and a boost in confidence.
Yes, Abeka is repetitive, but when tailored to your needs, it’s a really great curriculum. Stay tuned for a detailed flip-through video where I’ll share how we make it work for us.
Keeping It Traditional with Abeka Spelling
Continuing with our Abeka journey, we’re sticking to their spelling curriculum. We’re currently at List 9, and my kiddo is cruising through it with enthusiasm.
It’s a traditional approach that works well for us, so we’ll keep using it for 2024.
Handwriting
Handwriting is my daughter’s favorite subject, and this year, she’s so excited to dive into cursive writing.
She has always used The Good & The Beautiful Handwriting. It’s been a wonderful fit for her and so we’re planning on continuing with it for the foreseeable future.
Literature
Last but certainly not least, we’re also continuing with literature this year.
Having used Sonlight Level 1 readers last year, my daughter is continuing with those and will then transition into the Grade 2 readers.
With an emphasis on independent and enjoyable reading, we’re not stressing over a strict pace. It’s all about fostering a love for literature.
Group Studies
Apart from these individual subjects, our family comes together for history, Bible, literature studies, science, and enrichment studies.
It’s a collaborative effort that ensures shared learning experiences. It also helps to keep to a short school day and keep costs affordable.
Final Thoughts
As we step into this new academic year, I’m really excited. Each child’s journey is unique, and flexibility is the name of the game.
My daughter grew so much last year, I’m looking forward to seeing how she does with our curriculum choices for this year.
