Scriptures for Your Broken Heart

Your unborn child isn’t just a memory. They existed and were deeply loved. Pregnancy loss is difficult no matter what. I remember really struggling with that feeling of unbearable grief. The lack of having something tangible to grieve was devastating.
God’s Word and the hope that Jesus Christ offers held me up and gave me hope. I pray the same can be said for you.
Our Heavenly Father’s great love cannot be used up. He is there, ever faithful, unchanging. Lean on Him. God’s promises are something that never fail. He points out over and over again in Scripture that little children are a good thing.
Bad things happen because we live in a broken world.
We won’t understand why He decides to take them to the Kingdom of God, but we can rest in the knowledge that He is always good and that He loves our babies even more than we do.

How to Use These Miscarriage Scriptures

It’s all well and good knowing which Scriptures to turn to, but how do you practically use them?
Below are a few ideas:
- Read them out loud – during a time of so many exhausting thoughts, it can be really helpful to read aloud God’s Word and allow His truth to speak to your heart.
- Write them down in a journal – this can be a special place that you can go to when you just need a minute to grieve or remember your baby.
- Memorize them – memorizing Scripture is something I have found to be profoundly helpful in my life.
- Meditate on them throughout the day – think about His Word often.
- Stick them in places that you often look – I put Scripture near the kitchen sink, my bedroom mirror, and even the dashboard of my car.
- Sing them – Scripture set to music has a wonderful way of really sinking into our hearts.
- Share them with someone who is also struggling – helping others often aids our own healing process.
I’ve had many moments in my life where leaning on Scripture was almost a way of survival. I have never once regretted hiding God’s Word in my heart.
By taking the time to focus on God’s promises, we can find hope and strength in Him.
Living With Grief
The grief of miscarriage is different for everyone. Grief itself is unpredictable and unique to each person.
For some women, the miscarriage may have happened early on in the pregnancy and they may not have shared the news with many people. In this case, the grief may be more private.
Other women may have miscarried later in the pregnancy and had to deliver their baby. This can bring up a whole new set of emotions to deal with.
When a pregnant woman shares the news of her pregnancy is a very personal choice. The right thing to do is what is right for your family.
After my miscarriage, I grieved hard for about a month. Things got easier after that until one day the grief came out of nowhere and crippled me again.
You don’t know what will trigger you or when. There’s no shame in feeling those feelings. It didn’t matter what number of children I had. I experienced the loss of a child and it was a healing process that I had to go through.
Your time of grief can’t be put into a specific box of time. Not even you can predict how long it will last.
Having bible verses to meditate on isn’t a short-term fix. It has helped me so much over time. They’re always there to look back on. He never changes. He is steadfast and faithful. His truth is forever.
Things Aren’t Black and White
Life does get easier again. You won’t always feel this crippling grief.
Losing a child means that part of your heart is already in heaven. It can feel like a really long time to have a broken heart.
You may also start to feel guilty when you don’t feel so sad every day. I know I did. It was as though my depth of grief measured how much I loved my child. Those guilty feelings were hard to work through as well. In some ways, it was the hardest thing when I started to feel normal again.
Joy and deep grief can coexist. This is something I didn’t understand until I went through it. I actually think it’s one of the beautiful things about this life. It was good news to me to know that I didn’t have to let go of my grief in order to still find joy in the everyday.
You can be thankful, joyful, and grieving all at once.
What You Need to Know
What it means to be a grieving mother will look different to everyone. Just know that there’s no one way to go through the healing journey after the loss of a child. Even the strongest person can struggle to work through this painful experience.
I hope that you can lean into these words of comfort and that they give you hope during such a difficult time. I pray that His unfailing love will be felt keenly by you.
Remember that there is no time limit to your grief. However, there is also no limit to God’s love and comfort.
