Trekking Through History: Homeschool History Game Review

Trekking Through History was sent to me to review and I was honestly surprised by how much I enjoyed the products.

In this post, I’m going to share my thoughts on this history game and some ideas for how you might like to use it to enhance your homeschool.

What Is Trekking Through History?

Trekking Through History is a board game but there’s more to it than your old-school snacks and ladders.

This game is intended to be played by those aged 10 and up and is meant for 2-4 players.

When it arrived it came in a sturdy box and everything inside was well packaged. I live in New Zealand and this was sent to me from the States so I was impressed with how well it looked when it turned up. International postage handling isn’t exactly gentle most of the time.

Now, none of my children are technically old enough to play this game, so it was mostly me who reviewed it.

Also, while this may be viewed as something to use with children, I definitely think that adults will enjoy playing this. I know I have!

The basic premise of this game is to collect tokens and gems as you travel through history. At the end of the game, these rewards that are collected equate to points that will determine the winner.

How to Play Trekking Through History

For the sake of this post, I will share a very basic overview of how you play the game. When you receive the game there are very detailed instructions are included.

There are also a couple of gameplay variations which are also explained.

Each player has a card that they’re trying to collect tokens for. Depending on which tokens you collect you can unlock certain bonuses.

On your turn, you get to choose a history card. The cards hold certain benefits. You’re also trying to create a chronological timeline with the history cards. One of the key points is that you cannot go back in time.

If there are no other cards to choose from that fit in your timeline, you have to start a new one.

The game is played in three rounds (days). There’s a clock that determines the length of each day.

There are also gems that can be collected that can essentially buy time so that you can make the most of each day.

At the end of the third day, all the points are tallied up and the winner is determined.

It can seem pretty overwhelming when you first start reading the instructions, but it really is a great game! I found that the best way to learn how to play it was to just get started and it makes sense as you go.

Things I Really Like About This Homeschool History Game

This is a FUN game! It did seem overwhelming when I first opened it up but all the different parts make it truly interesting.

Another thing that I loved about it is that it has a single-player mode. This is such a great thing to include.

I found that Trekking Through History has a good amount of strategy to it without it being overly difficult.

However, something to be aware of is that there are difficulty levels in the single-player mode. So, once you have a handle on how things work you can continue to challenge yourself.

It was really fun to see historical figures and events that we had been studying in our homeschool history curriculum this year.

I believe that this game could really help your kids connect the dots when it comes to historical events. It makes it come alive and become a lot of fun.

Ways to Use This In Your Homeschool

If you’re not using a traditional history curriculum, you could totally make this a part of your weekly homeschool routine.

You could definitely use the flashcards to memorize facts and do a deep dive. You could base a unit study around specific figures.

It is also a really great tool for history review. Perhaps you feel as though your children aren’t really getting a full understanding of history and so this would be a fun way of reinforcing the topics you’ve taught.

Finally, you may just need a break from your traditional curriculum. With this game, your children will still be learning history but they’ll be practicing strategy, logic, and many other skills while doing it!

If you’re wanting to keep some fun learning happening over the summer break, I’d definitely consider this game.

Things You Might Want to Know About Trekking Through History

There are only really a couple of things to make note of about this game.

Firstly, they don’t follow a young earth timeline. This may not be an issue for you, but it also might be.

I also think you can still play it anyway and just make a note of the dates and use it as a discussion point with your children.

Secondly, there are a lot of little pieces. However, the packaging is well thought out and so I’ve found that there’s a place for everything to be stored nicely.
