Kindergarten Homeschool Curriculum for 2022

I’m a little stunned at the fact that I’m now prepping to homeschool a kindergartener for a second time. Gosh, how time flies!

One would think that setting up a homeschool curriculum for your second child would be a breeze because you’ve already done it once before. In fact, it can be just as much of a challenge because as we all know, children are not robots. They are not carbon copies of their siblings.

I will say, I do have some knowledge from having homeschooled my older child that made choosing curriculum easier.

For instance, truly understanding how your child learns best really does help simplify the process. You figure out what works and what doesn’t and how to focus on what’s truly important.

With all that said, here are the kindergarten curriculum choices I’ve made for 2022.

Kindergarten Homeschool Curriculum for 2022

My daughter is my “workbook kid”. She is more than happy to sit down with a pencil and just write. She colors for hours on end and has been drawing since she was tiny.

Her attention span is definitely longer than my son’s was at her age. That doesn’t make her a better student, it just means she has a different way of learning.

Despite all that, a lot of the materials I settled on were things that I had previously used with my son. They’re things that I felt were tried and tested and would work for several different ways of learning.

Annie only has a few individual subjects and then the rest will be done together, family-style.

Language Arts

Language Arts is the one subject I did a lot of trial and error with when it came to my son. It took us a while to find our groove.

Ultimately, that helped in the long run because I’m more familiar with what will likely work for my daughter.

For that reason, we’re using All About Reading Level 1 for this year. It’s a solid, phonics-based curriculum that uses the Orton Gillingham method to teach reading.

This curriculum worked really well for my son and gave me the confidence to teach him how to read.

I don’t plan to try and make it through the entire curriculum in a year but instead, to take it at her pace and just see how she does. There’s no rush.

Along with All About Reading I have a couple of other curriculums that we’ll be supplementing with.

These are completely optional as All About Reading is plenty enough in and of itself. However, I know my daughter will want more.

For that reason, I’ve got the Level K Primer from The Good & The Beautiful for her to work through. If she finishes that and would like more I’ve also got all four Ready to Read units from Gather Round.

Basically, we’re spoilt for choice and will use what feels right throughout the year.

Math

Over the past couple of years, my daughter made her way through Math Lessons for a Living Education Level K from Masterbooks.

It was an okay curriculum but I’m not sure I would make the purchase again.

This year, we will be using Simply Good & Beautiful Math Level K from The Good & The Beautiful. I used their new math with my son last year and really enjoyed it.

I’m very much looking forward to using level K with my daughter this year. The lessons are colorful, engaging, and interactive.

Besides that, it is also very much open and go which is something I’m leaning on more and more as my children get older.

Handwriting

My daughter’s handwriting is fairly advanced for her age and is something she really enjoys. I haven’t done any formal handwriting with her yet but this year we will begin.

I plan on using Writing with Phonics Grade 1 from Abeka.

The reason we’re using this curriculum is purely because it was gifted to us. Otherwise, I would have used Level 1 from The Good & The Beautiful.

Honestly, it’s not a subject I put a heavy focus on in kindergarten because it really isn’t developmentally appropriate to be demanding a lot of handwriting.

I’d rather have a focus on just doing a little bit and doing it really well.

Enrichment Studies

I plan on writing a whole blog post on our family enrichment subjects but as an overview, we will be covering the following this year:

• Picture Study
• Composer Study
• Art
• History
• Science
• Scripture Memory
• Habit Study
• Hymn Study
• Nature Study
• Geography

This looks like a lot but most lessons will be very short and therefore manageable.

Conclusion

I love the kindergarten year. It is fun and lessons are short. It’s a beautiful transition time between preschool and elementary. Many special memories can be made and wonderful learning opportunities are found every day.

Our kindergarten homeschool curriculum choices are very specific to our children so they may not work for you. However, it is helpful to know what other homeschool moms are using, especially when you’re just starting out.
