Have you heard about the Moms On Call swaddle?
Perhaps you’ve read about it in their book and now you’re wondering if it is really necessary. I mean, what makes it so special?
This post is here to answer all of those questions for you.

What Is the Moms On Call Swaddle?
So what exactly is the Moms On Call swaddle?
It isn’t just a product, but also a swaddling technique. Honestly, it can take a bit of practice to get right, but once you’ve got it, it can certainly make a difference to your baby’s sleep.
If you’ve never even heard of Moms On Call, it is a baby book that covers baby care. However, many parents love it for the sleep advice it gives and the baby schedules provided.
You can find the Moms On Call Book here.
Part of that advice includes using the Moms On Call swaddling technique to help encourage your baby to sleep for longer stretches.
Here is a great video showing parents how to swaddle their babies using the Moms On Call swaddle.
How Does the Moms On Call Swaddle Work?
But HOW does the swaddle help your baby to sleep longer?
I mean, I think it is a fairly well known fact that swaddling a baby is helpful in the early days because it reduces the impact of the startle reflex that they’re born with.
It can be frustrating when your newborn finally drifts off only to wake themselves up with their hands flailing in their little face.
Swaddling helps to eliminate that.
However, the Moms On Call swaddle claims to do even more than that. The swaddle itself isn’t magical, but the way in which you use it can make all the difference.
It is made to be large so that it will do the job you want it to.
That job is to put pressure in certain areas in order to mimic the same feeling they would have when being held by you.
The authors of the book are two paediatric nurses with years of experience between them. They know how to soothe babies and get them to sleep well.
This swaddling technique is something that they highly recommend in order to keep your baby calm and sleeping well.

Where Can You Get the Moms On Call Swaddle?
You can get the Moms On Call swaddle blanket directly from Amazon, which is super convenient.
Do You Have to Use the Moms On Call Swaddle for Moms On Call to Work?
Here’s the magic question.
Do you have to use the Moms On Call swaddle for the Moms On Call method to work?
Will your baby still sleep through the night by 3 months of age or is it going to set you back?
Personally, I have used the Moms On Call method with 2/3 of my children and was not able to use the Moms On Call Swaddle because of the cost of getting it to New Zealand.
My girls were both sleeping through the night by 4 months of age.
They were little and so needed a dream feed past 3 months, but dropped it by 4.
So yes, you can absolutely still succeed with Moms On Call without using their swaddle, however, it will make the whole process easier.
If you can get your hands on one or two of their swaddle blankets, I would recommend it.
When my babies were still really little, I used their swaddling techniques using the blankets that they already had.
However, once they outgrew them, I used other swaddles.
If I could have, I would have used Moms On Call swaddling blankets all the way through.
Other Swaddle Suggestions:
If you are like me and aren’t able to get the Moms On Call swaddle easily or affordably, then here are a couple of options that also work well and can be used for your baby right up until it is time to drop the swaddle altogether.
Batwing technique
This is a swaddling technique that requires two blankets. You can watch the video below to see how to do it.
I recommend using either a muslin blanket or flannel receiving blanket to help keep the arms down.
You can then either use a swaddling blanket over the top or a zip-up or velcro swaddle.
The Miracle Blanket
The Miracle Blanket is brilliant at keeping even the most wriggly baby swaddled up tight.
I love that it doesn’t have any velcro and is super simple to use.
In fact, it is basically a swaddle that acts like the batwing swaddle technique.

What If My Baby Doesn’t Like to Be Swaddled?
I’ve seen many times moms despairing because their baby does not like to be swaddled.
However, if your baby is under 2-months of age, I would still recommend swaddling them. Often times it isn’t so much swaddling that is the real issue.
It can be due to baby being put to sleep too late resulting in overtiredness.
Aside from that, it can also be down to the swaddling technique, in which case I recommend trying different ways to swaddle.
It is unlikely that the Moms On Call swaddle technique won’t appeal to a baby as it will make them feel secure and similar to being held.
